Four New Foodtrainers' Favorites and Giveaway

Years ago, I remember meeting Kara Goldin in the expo hall at a convention. She had one of the off-to –the-side booths reserved for small companies. I sampled my first Hint water; it was watermelon (or was it pear?). I loved that Hint had no sugar juice, dyes or artificial sweetener. At that time, we couldn’t get Hint in the New York area. Times have changed; this year Fortune magazine named Kara one it’s most promising women entrepreneurs. And there’s a new Hint in town, Hint Fizz.  Depending on how you look at it, Hint Fizz is either an extremely flavorful seltzer or a truly natural soda. I’m a fan of drinking from glass so the Hint Fizz bottles make me happy. Plus, they sort of remind me of the Foodtrainers website (in a good way).

If we’re talking drinks, it makes sense to talk bars (get it? so bad I know). I mentioned some of my favorite bars a while ago and I’m still in love with Zing Bars, Real Bars, Kookie Karma and now Savory Bars.  Recently, I tried Picky Bars

Packaging Points

Picky Bars are gluten free, dairy free and less than 200 calories. They also have enjoyable mini chocolate chips in them. I’m partial to Lauren’s Mega Nut flavor but the Lauren mentioned on the label looks like this:
My running outfit is a little different, so is my pace.
She’s Lauren Fleshman, one of the founders, who just finished the NYC Marathon in 16th place. There’s a great article about her marathon journey from the New York Times and I’ll point out that she eats oatmeal as a prerace meal. For those of you who read the Runners World post, they printed my letter in the January issue with a reply perpetuating fiber phobia for runners. Maybe they should talk to the other Lauren.

For you pro-pumpkin people (you know who you are), Pacific Natural Foods has an organic pumpkin puree. No more canned pumpkin. For the uninitiated, you can use pumpkin in oatmeal, Greek yogurt, smoothies or of course pumpkin pie. Aside from its high fiber and low calorie content, pumpkin is also a decent source of iron.

I know this last “find” didn’t photograph too well. I snapped a quick shot before my friends got their spoons in this.

What is it? It’s the Borscht with Toasted Hazelnuts and Horseradish Flan from The Modern. I went to see the de Kooning exhibit but seriously couldn’t stop thinking of this soup. If you’re in NYC stop by The Modern’s Bar Room (better than dining room in my opinion) and try this. If you’re not in the area, they tweeted me the link to the recipe.  Would it be rude to tweet back and ask for the recipe in a format other than grams of everything?
Have you tried any of these? Did you enjoy them? Are their other flavored waters or bars you like? Do you pumpkin? How so? And finally, when was the last time you had borscht?
*The Hint people have offered to send a lucky reader some Hint, be sure to comment and if you're a Hint fan, name your favorite flavor.

  1. I'm guessing the the Hint water has some type of sugar/sweetener in it that I can't have. Maybe not? If not, I'll give a "hint" that I like the blackberry flavor!
The bars sound interesting. Actually it sounds like another bar that was made for elite athletes but that may be turned into an "average-Joe's snack". Maybe not.
The pureed pumpkin grabs my heart :) I'm one of those crazy pumpkin lovers!!

  2. I've never tried Hint, but I'd love to -- it sounds delicious, and I love that it seems like it wouldn't be overwhelmingly sweet. I'm such a pumpkin-er, and love that Pacific has an un-canned version -- makes me feel better about BPA, but I'm not sure if their packaging is BPA free? I'll just assume so. I LOVE borscht -- I had some a week or so ago! I like mixing borscht with risotto - it is perfect for the holidays or Valentine's day!

Also -- regarding the buckwheat bake -- that wasn't all I ate for breakfast! It was alongside a huge bowl of steaming hot veggies smeared with tahini...it made for a good morning!

  3. Gina- no sweetener, just fruit "essence" like the original hints. The picky bar was made for one of the athlete's boyfriends (maybe husband) more as a g-free, dairy free option.
Lauren- I recall that red risotto, that looked great. With the bake, I was referring less to the portion than to the time to cook. #Impatient here.

  4. Watermelon Hint is so good; i'll have to try the Fizz. And i'm all over that boxed pumpkin puree - i use it in muffins and pancakes and homemade fruit leathers pretty often.

  5. I LOVE Hint! Sometimes I feel bad about spending money on them... They are pretty expensive, even down here in Virginia. I love the Blackberry flavor. If they want to send me some (hint, hint - ah, bad pun), that would be awesome! And I've never even seen the "Fizz" kind, so that would be exciting to try!

  6. I can't wait to try the Hint Fizz–bubbles just add a little something. I'm intrigued by the peach flavor. It's probably way better than peach Fresca...

I know we're sort of nearing the end of, like, pumpkin obsession season, but I still can't get enough. I love it in oatmeal—and soup. My freezer is well stocked with leftover red lentil pumpkin stew right now.

  8. Great post. LOVE fizzy with hint o' fruit.
Like pumpkin and never thought of it with oatmeal.. sounds fab. AND...
love love love Borscht, and hazelnuts and horseradish so the recipe... minus the grams... looks great! :) Here's a metric conversion site, http://www.metric-conversions.org/weight/grams-to-ounces.htm, and there are tons more. I'll send you the recipe converted if I am inspired to take that on!

  11. I've never heard of Hint water or Hint Fizz... I would love to try the peach or the blackberry.
Love pumpkin! I use it to replace the butter in recipes -- muffins, cookies, pancakes, waffles, etc...

  12. I love pumpkin, I love Borscht, and I love de Kooning. What am I doing NOT at MOMA? haha. I think I saw one of his exhibits in Philly...I wonder if it's the same.

I am happy to learn that you endorse Hint water. I usually avoid stuff like that because it sounds gimmicky. But I would love to try the fizzy kind!

  14. I love pumpkin and borscht! I also agree the the Bar at the Modern is better than the main dining room. I love that restaurant and the room so much.

  15. I love borscht. We live half an hour from Grand Forks, BC which is famous for "sunshine and borscht". The borscht around here tends to be more white (more cabbage, less beets) but when I make it at home I essentially make beet soup :)

    I also love bubbly water.

  16. Jennie- sunshine and borscht, what could be better? Funny I always thought borscht's were always red.

  17. Love pumpkin - very intrigued by the packaging. I wonder if it's difficult to get the pumpkin out of, since you can't exactly scoop it out?? Perhaps is nice and smooth/creamy.

Hint sounds lovely, and I'm a huge sucker for chic packaging.

  18. You can open the top completely, comes out easily. I too often picked things up purely b/c of packaging.

  19. I've never tried any of the products, but I'd love to try the Hint Fizz. I also like the organic pumpkin puree that's not in a can!

  20. I wasn't aware that Hint had a new fizzy product! Love it since I crave carbonation sometimes. My favorite is Hint Cucumber because it reminds me of the spa!

  21. I've tried Hint water. They were part of a bloggers event I went to earlier this year. I remember liking their black currant flavor (does that flavor exist or am I just making it up?

  22. Pumpkin is amazing! It's the only way I will drink orange juice. I stir pumpkin puree into the orange juice. It's wonderful!
