Foodtrainers Favorite Healthy Frozen Desserts and Giveaways

Ice creams are a lot like classified ads where “low calorie” or “vegan” can be the equivalent to “water view” and “charming”. In both cases you have to taste or see for yourself. We sent out our Monthly Morsels Newsletter “All Things Ice Cream” today.  In the interest of “seeing for ourselves” we’ve taste tested big, small and local brands. I can assure you our selections are healthy and delicious.

Favorite Pops

Luna and Larry’s Naked Coconut Bliss Bars: there’s a simple ingredient list coconut milk, agave, dried coconut and vanilla extract. And if that’s not enough, Luna and Larry’s are giving coupons for free treats to 3 of our readers (see below for details).

We also love Yasso, tasty Greek yogurt pops with six grams of protein and only 70 calories.

Favorite Sorbet

Steve’s is one of our favorite local brands,  leave it to them to come up with a kombucha-flavored sorbet. Steve’s Red Ginger Kombucha was a huge during our taste tests. Even if you dislike kombucha, you’ll love this. Plus, if you’re in the NYC area Steve’s is giving away 5 flavors to a hungry reader.

Our runner up was Sambazon who makes an antioxidant rich acai sorbet.

Favorite Frozen Bites

Remember Dibs? Well how about dairy and gluten free dips. These little Almond Dream bites have 60 calories for four pieces and come in chocolate and vanilla flavors. Perfect for a “little” something sweet.

Favorite Ice Cream Sandwich
If you’ve given up gluten, that doesn’t mean you’ve given up ice cream sandwiches. Julie’s is here for you with a g free, organic ice cream sandwich that will please gluten eaters too. The true test, my children devoured the leftovers I brought home.

Favorite Real Deal

We’d vote a little of the real thing over gallons of faux froyo. For our number 1 we’re returning to Steve’s their cookie dough ice cream somehow left the office before I could take it home to the kids (another good sign). And, it happens to be from Steve’s dairy free/coconut based selections.

If you can’t find Steve’s we loved Trader Joe’s coconut based Strawberry Ice Cream and Ronnybrook Farm’s Ginger flavor.

Favorite New York City Treats

There are so many contestants vying for  #1 in the NYC froyo battle. For the most part, one taste and we’re back to the apartment where you have to stand on a chair and lean at a 45-degree angle to see the water view. Not good. However, despite our froyo issues in the past we’ve found two winners.
Victory Garden- talk about interesting flavors, we fell in love with Herbal. It’s made with flowers and herbs but tastes almost minty. And better yet? No junk allowed in these swirls.

Treat Petite makes frozen kefir. The pomegranate flavor was our office favorite. They're at 61 Grove Street at 7th Ave S in NYC.

Check back on Wednesday for our Healthy Ice Cream Hall of shame, ingredient red flags and another giveaway. Plus, we’re announcing our Luna and Larry’s and Steve’s winner. Speaking of which to be eligible:

  1. I haven't tried a single one of these, and to be honest, I'm not sure that we have them here in Ohio. Maybe I'm wrong?  I did try Trader Joe's coconut pops last week and they were AMAZING.  Nick is now officially addicted.  We also love Edy's slow churned fro yo (and of course, my homemade fro yo!)

  2. I love Sambazon Acai sorbet - it's the only one that I've tried.  Luna and Larry's Bliss Bars sound delicious too! Thanks so much!

  3. Ooh look and see maybe at Whole Foods Gina, so curious. Not sure about Edy's slow churned but their fruit pops use questionable food dyes. Homemade-wait for Friday's post.

  7. I've never tried any of these! Those naked coconut bars look pretty darn good. Unfortunately I think I'm a tad far to participate in any giveaway, but I happy to know where to pick up good ice cream next time I visit NYC. Thanks!

  8. There is something magical about summer and ice cream, no? I'd love to be entered to try the Steve's...

  9. Victory Garden sounds amazing - will have to try - I haven't been "wowed" by frozen yogurt in the past so will be good to have an option in the summer months!

Cashewtopia "ice cream" (had me fooled)  is one of my favorites and every now and then, a frozen banana thrown in a blender with unsweetened cocoa does the trick too.

But when I go for the real thing - I am obsessed with Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams (http://www.jenis.com/), very specifically, the Salty Caramel. They are based out of Ohio, and source all of their ingredients from local/organic farms.  They have storefronts there (lucky people), but you can find it in Whole Foods and Brooklyn Fair. Even better - she thankfully published an ice cream cookbook, so more often than not, I just make it myself, which makes it that much more satisfying :)

  10. I'd like to try the coconut bliss bars and there are four stores in Des Moines that sell them. I'm no fan of "healthy" ice cream and (I'm sure this will shock you to your core, Lauren) I just eat the real deal when I eat ice cream.

My MIL is having a garage sale this weekend and is selling an electric ice cream maker for $2. I've started pondering making the purchase, but really, I have no idea what to do with it in terms of inventive flavors and enough friends to eat it all.

  12. I've heard about Jeni's, I think on Best Thing I Ever Ate. They ship I believe. Jen try Steve's Salted Caramel and you meet Marc and he has a gut by the end of the summer, it's a salted caramel gut, well earned.

  13. And if anyone is in SF Bi-rite's salted caramel is worth every calorie (strawberry balsamic good too).

I've never heard of Victory Garden but will definitely be checking it out now, as froyo is just about my favorite thing in the world.

But actually, my real favorite thing is cookie dough, so Steve's might be it.  Thanks to you, I now have many more sweets to try.  Don't worry, I'll take it slow, one at a time :)

  34. My kids love ice cream, froyo, and anything in that category. They saw me start to read this blog, and they were like --we want to try it all. Keeping it local works easy for me. Coconut is a huge favorite in our house, and I am so curious about the Almond Bites. It looks like I will be hitting Whole Foods for a re-fill for our freezer.
PS - anything named Julie has to be divine!

  37. Steve's cookie dough sounds amazing. Is it also dairy free? (A must for me; regular ice cream makes my stomach hurt like woah, so I'm constantly in search of dairy-free icy treats in NYC.)
