What the day of the week means for your weight

It’s strategic when clients schedule appointments with me on Mondays. A Monday check in means that weekend socializing and food fun will be curbed slightly, at least that’s the intention. I was watching Chelsea Handler’s show last week and she shared she was having a skinny day because it was Wednesday. She explained it takes a couple days to recover post-weekend. Surprisingly a study concluded that women look their worst and oldest on Wednesdays versus any other day of the week, 3:30pm Wednesday if you really want to know.

Women are keyed into having a “time of the month” but I had never stopped to think that our body image and perhaps weight fluctuates throughout the week.  Statistically many things vary according to the day of the week. You’re more likely to die on a Monday and more likely to drink on Saturday though that drinking isn't likely related to the possibility of a Monday death.

Weekdays for me are fairly organized and predictable. Weekday workouts aren’t affected by the boys’ sports or birthday parties. There’s also little restaurant eating. So I would say Friday is the day I feel most confident. On the other end of the spectrum I’m not a Monday girl. For other people, more free time on the weekend may mean food shopping or cooking or workouts they don't have time for during the week. Once we pinpoint our patterns we can then try to change the worst day and modify the habits that play into this.

If you’re wondering what’s in store for you today, I should tell you that Thursday is typically the best day for sex…just saying.
What day of the week do you feel your best? When do you feel the most rested? Are you old-looking on Wednesdays or skinny like Chelsea?

    Interesting.

For me, it all comes down to planning. If I don't plan, it's much harder to make good choices. Usually, I am really good about planning for the week, but weekends can be a bit tricky, especially now that the kid has much more of a social life! :)

  2. kids social lives, such a problem, right? So then you feel your best during the week, less so on weekends. I wonder if that's a parental theme.

  3. I agree that planning is the best way to manage good choices. My workouts are kind of set in stone - the weekday ones are not really variable, and the weekend ones are a little more difficult to do at the same time every single weekend, but saturday and sunday mornings are for workouts almost without fail - I might vary the exact time and activity a little though, depending on our plans that day.

As for eating, it's definitely worse on the weekends, due to the possibility for eating out. I also find that just being home and having snacks available can be dangerous, even though I don't keep junk in the house - there's still food. Weekday meals are a lot more planned and, as a result, are a lot more healthy. I have to do the shopping on a particular day when I have time, so I only make the meals I have planned to make for the week - and I try as hard as I can to plan healthy meals. I am a planner by nature though, so this approach appeals to me. I'm interested to hear whether it works for others!

  4. Haha every time I wake up on a Tuesday morning now I'll remember to be happy I made it through Monday!

I agree that life is a lot more organized during the week in terms of eating/workouts, and I find that makes it easier to be spontaneous on weekends. I would totally believe that Wednesday afternoon is the low point, but then...I feel pretty wiped by Friday evenings, so who knows? As far as sex goes, though, I feel like any night is the best night, even if it interferes with my beauty sleep.

  5. This is one of the reasons I went to see you. I have no standard week. It is so odd, I will forget sometimes that it is Saturday or Sunday because they can be work days and a Monday can be an off day. It is all about planning though. Being on Maternity Leave has made me miss being a "normal" person.

  6. I can't decide if that's good or bad Melanie, though an ER docs schedule is not something many of us would envy. Sometimes though I feel we know it's a weekend day etc and it becomes self fulfilling.

  7. I am wiped out end of week too but maybe at least Friday there's a reward in sight. Funny how we all frame things, when I heard the thursday fact I instantly thought, what's wrong with me? I need to have sex every thursday. Any way to internalize pressure (oops didn't mean it that way, promise)

  8. huge plan of menu planning, batch cooking on one day for at least a few items though my book publisher told me "unrealistic". Never write a book or all the days are the "old" or ugly days.

  9. I definitely struggle with this! I'm "good" during the week but all the birthday parties and other social activities on the weekends tends to throw me off so I'm feeling bloated and maybe even a little guilty on Mondays. I feel great on Thursdays and Fridays (after being relatively more disciplined during the week). Clearly, I need to find a better way to balance my habits out all 7 days of the week!

  10. I tend to eat the same weekends/weekdays, except for bigger breakfasts sometimes, and maybe a couple of cocktails or wine on the weekend, so, overall, I probably feel my best Tu-Friday. The exception to that is if I run on the weekend, and then I usually feel fabulous afterwards :-)
