I thought the can’t wear white before Memorial Day or after
Labor Day rule didn’t hold anymore. Sure there may be a few people who got this
memo but not many according to Instagram. As I scrolled through my account this
weekend, there were swarms of ladies in their stark white jeans. I didn’t wear
white jeans this weekend but since it has been some time since I donned my
pallid pants, I pulled them off my closet shelves to try them on.
I own three pair of white jeans. I put on the first. I’m sure
many women like their jeans snug or form fitting but I’m not one of them. At a
store where I shop at they joke that I like everything a size too big. I would say
most people like things a size too small. I can guarantee the first pair I
slipped (or pulled on with some effort) was the result of boutique peer
pressure and I’m pretty sure I have never worn them out. In this Goldilocks of
white jeans story the next pair was baggie and probably not the most flattering.
And that third pair? It was the best of the three. Nothing needs to be sucked
in and yet they would be suitable for going out to dinner.
To tell you the truth I get more excited about a summery
dress than something I wear all year round in another color. But white is de rigueur in summer (which makes me like it less) so I did a
little digging. While many fashion experts claim white doesn’t necessarily make
you look heavier, I have multiple sources saying it’s less forgiving. There are
a lot of theories about no white after Labor Day/only in summer ranging from
white looks better when you are a little tan, white is difficult to keep clean
and so with furnaces and fireplaces didn’t make sense. Who knows? All I know is
chances are many of you pulled out and pulled on those white jeans this
weekend, how’d it go?
Do you own white
jeans? Do you use them to see how you feel body-wise? Are white jeans the new
skinny jeans? Do you wear white pants all year round?
White jeans and I don't get along. a) I'm too pale to wear anything white b) I'm a slob. I will drop something on those white jeans in no time. Oh and I like everything a size too big too. :)
ReplyDeletei have not been able to wear white since being in catholic school for twelve years and being forced to wear white shirts every single day.
ReplyDeletenothing white at all? I like a white tee but the pants...
ReplyDeleteooh you may dislike them more than I do Claire.
ReplyDeleteI wear white jeans pretty much all summer long. I don't like to wear shorts, so white jeans or summer dresses are my go to. I love jbrand 811 and AG stilt. Not too tight, not too baggy. White jeans are definitely a lot less forgiving than blue or black.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a big fan of white jeans - I own one pair but don't wear them often. I agree that they are less flattering, I think they show all the lumps and bumps. I am also a big big fan of summer dresses. The ones from Athleta are among my favorites, very cute and flattering. I wear them all summer long!
ReplyDeleteI wear white jeans all year round here (except summer because I can't handle pants when it's 118 degrees out). Arizona and west coast seem to be "wear what you want when you want" places.
ReplyDeletedidn't think about that, definitely depends on where you are, right? just seemed the white jeans were exploding among the East coasters. Can you even wear white jeans when it's 118? 118 doesn't even sound human.
ReplyDeleteNot a lump or bump fan, I'll keep my blue denim and pretend I don't have any.
ReplyDeleteAhh Julie I loved shorts until I turned 4-0 , ha. Love the brand info, I have a j brand but I think my favorites were "rich and skinny" which made me chuckle.
ReplyDeleteWhen it's that hot, I wear as little as possible (while still being legal of course)
ReplyDeleteI always think about the seasonal white rule - not before Memorial Day and not after Labor Day. HOWEVER, I have broken that rule many times and have been appeased by reading articles and blogs just like your post today! I even wrote about this years ago, http://iwishmymom.wordpress.com/2011/05/10/white-before-memorial-day
ReplyDeleteAnd, I must admit that this year, after our crazy cold winter, I had no desire to wear white until just yesterday.
White jeans, on the other hand, are completely acceptable year-round and, as you suggest, during skinny times!
Happy Warm Days Ahead!
Shari- didn't know of your blog or backstory, thank you for sharing. funny that we both can spend time debating white and whether to follow the rules.
ReplyDeletePS: I must thank you Lauren- one reason I am able to currently feel happy in my white jeans is your The Little Book of Thin- Your Ten Steps make so much sense - my current favorite is #8- Closing the kitchen after dinner.
